Democratic Party United States - The Democratic Party is one of two major contemporary political parties in the United States along with the Republican Party. The party supports a socially liberal and progressive platform, and its Congressional caucus is composed of progressives, liberals, centrists, and libertarians.The party has the lengthiest record of continuous operation in the United States and is one of the oldest political parties in the world. Barack Obama is the 15th Democrat to hold the office of President of the United States.
As of the 112th Congress following the 2010 elections, the Democratic Party currently holds a minority of seats in the House of Representatives, a majority of seats in the Senate, a minority of state governorships, as well as a minority of state legislatures.
It should be noted that defining the views of any "faction" of any political party is difficult at best, and that any attempt to apply labels within a single political party is no more effective than the application of broad labels to political parties as a whole. Keeping that in mind, there are several ideological groups widely recognized within the modern-day Democratic Party.
