A Southern California mom has been charged with helping her daughter and two other teens draw swastikas at a nearby home in a case that drew the Twitter ire of “Saturday Night Live” veteran Jon Lovitz.

Catharine Whelpley is accused of driving the teens to a former friend's home, where the girls smeared human feces on the property and poured syrup on a car as part of the April 3 vandalism, authorities say. Whelpley's 14-year-old daughter then allegedly used syrup to draw swastikas and the word "Jew" near the front door.

Afterwards, Whelpley drove her daughter and the two other girls home, authorities said.

The vandalism was captured on a neighbor's surveillance camera and was called to attention by Lovitz, who posted a photo of the swastikas sandwiched by the word "Jew" on his Twitter account.

"Swastikas in (excrement) left on my friend's front porch were done by three 14-year-old girls, driven to the house by one of the girl's mother," Lovitz tweeted to his 40,000-plus followers in April.

Catharine Whelpley is also accused of driving the same teens to a second home where they are accused of vandalism and defacing the property.

Prosecutors threw the book at the 44-year-old Northridge mom Monday, charging her with three counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, two counts of vandalism, two counts of trespassing, and two counts of tampering with a vehicle, according to the Los Angeles Daily News.

"The conduct alleged in this case is unacceptable in our society," Los Angeles City Attorney Carmen Trutanich told the newspaper. "The persons responsible for such conduct, including parents, will be held accountable for their actions."

The teens did not commit a hate crime because the material that was used could easily be washed off, the City Attorney's Office told the L.A. Daily News. But prosecutors believe they found a way to hold Whelpley legally responsible.

"I'm really kind of impressed with the creativity applied here," Amanda Susskind, the Los Angeles-area director for the Anti-Defamation League told the newspaper. "Everybody looked at this and thought this was going to fall through the cracks."
