What happened next will live on the Internet forever — or at least until tomorrow. With the medal draped around her neck, Maroney stood on the podium with her arms crossed and a scowl across her face. She looked thoroughly… unimpressed.The viral phenomenon was born Tuesday night when the domain “mckaylaisnotimpressed” was registered on Tumblr by Gavin Alaoen, a 28-year-old digital designer in New York. He started by Photoshopping a cutout of Maroney into three Olympic shots: Usain Bolt posing with the London Games’s one-eyed mascot, the U.S. men’s basketball team hamming it up on the sideline and Alex Morgan scoring a goal to send the U.S. women’s soccer team into the gold-medal game.
That’s when things got weird. Since then, Maroney has been not impressed by pretty much everything: double rainbows, “The Starry Night,” the Situation Room, Kanye West telling Taylor Swift that Beyonce had one of the best videos of all-time, the American Revolution, the Sistine Chapel, Blake Griffin dunking over a car, graduating college, Beyonce’s pregnancy, man on the moon and beaches. Also, Magic Mike. Alaoen even published the picture of Maroney so anyone could make their own, and he has since started posting outside submissions.Alaoen said he’s a fan of similar Tumblrs, like Spock Is Not Impressed and Kim Jong-Il Looking at Things, but this was his first attempt at creating one. Less than a day old, the blog now has more than 1,200 followers, he said, and it has been tweeted thousands of times.
“It’s just a two-or-three-week kind of thing,” Alaoen said. “It’s a hot topic right now. And then it’s onto the next one.”
As for Maroney? She was taking a tour of London on Wednesday with her teammates and tweeted a link to the blog from her iPhone. “This tumblr is kinda funny, made me laugh,” she wrote.
Actually, she sounded not not impressed.
Alaoen doesn’t use Twitter, though. So four hours after her tweet, after a lunch of Thai food, Alaoen still had to be told that Maroney approved. His response: “That’s awesome!”
