Seventeen years ago today, Oklahomans suffered an enormous tragedy -- the Murrah Building bombing and the loss of 168 lives.

Today, Gov. Mary Fallin, Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett, alongside dozens of city and state leaders, will gather to remember those lost for the 17th Anniversary Remembrance Ceremony.

The anniversary began at 8:55 a.m. and included 168 seconds of silence starting at 9:02 a.m. at the Oklahoma City National Memorial.

That number honors the 168 lives that were lost on the day of the bombing, including 19 young children.

Family members and rescue workers read aloud the names of everyone killed in the bombing.

"It was an attack that could have easily crippled our city, and left our people hopeless. It did not. Instead, the people of Oklahoma banded together - with the help of volunteers and well-wishers from across the nation and even the world - to overcome. We worked together; we comforted one another; and we rebuilt. Today we are a more prosperous city and a stronger people," said Gov. Mary Fallin.

"Seventeen years ago, a force of evil tried to derail our spirit and sense of community, but only served to strengthen it. We have overcome that adversity and built this state into a grander vision of purpose," Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt said.
