Joe Klamar Olympic photos

Joe Klamar Olympic photos, 'Disgraceful' photos of U.S. Olympians go viral, Agence France-Presse photographer Joe Klamar's photos of this year's crop of United States Olympic athletes has been called "disgraceful," "shoddy," "obviously terrible" and a host of unrepeatable names, since they were recently posted on CBS' website. Klamar took the photos during the Olympics' chaotic "media day," which some say partially explains the photos' obvious mistakes in composition, lighting, lens choice and background.

Joe Klamar Olympic Photos Disgraceful Shoddy Obviously Terrible, Joe Klamar Olympic Photos Disgraceful Shoddy Obviously Terrible – It was a photo shoot by an award-winning photographer that hoped to immortalize the US Olympic team ahead of this summer’s Games.

But the result is a series of images the athletes involved may want to forget, after they were met with widespread mockery, and even anger.

‘Shoddy’, ‘amateur’, ‘disgraceful’ and ‘an embarrassment’ are just some of the words being used to describe AFP’s pictures from May’s Olympic Summit, which were leaked on the internet yesterday.

Photographer Joe Klamar was criticized for using the wrong camera lens, incorrect lighting, awkward poses and exposed sets to produce images of ‘amateurish’ quality.

What might be worse is that the photographs – most of which contain American flags and are predominantly colored in red, white and blue – were leaked today, Independence Day, to widespread and furious backlash.

The Czech photographer – along with many others – was given access to the Team USA athletes in Dallas, Texas.

Mr Klamar was on assignment for AFP and the photographs were then distributed by Getty Images. They were taken before the final Olympic team was chosen.

As soon as they were released on the internet, Mr Klamar’s work was criticized on blogs, Twitter, Facebook and even in Popular Photography Magazine, where his shots has been torn to shreds by experts and amateurs alike.

One photographer wrote on a blog: ‘This is an embarrassment to our country and my profession.’

On Facebook someone wrote: ‘My child could do better than this,’ while Slate magazine commented: ‘Klamar’s portfolio makes our athletes look silly and desperate – the wrinkled guts of a makeshift studio serves only to steal their spotlight.’

But others believe the effect Mr Klamar, who has been a photographer for more than 20 years, was trying to create was deliberately subversive. The exposed sets, shadowed lighting and awkward angles are believed intentional.

The photographer is known for shooting things ‘a little differently’ and from different viewpoints to everyone else. One reddit commentator said: ‘There is no way any photographer with a mind for composition would make these mistakes. … If you were to tell me to set up shots to be as ugly as possible, but to not get caught, I would do these same setups.

‘I think he must be making a statement about the way society paints athletes as perfect. Showing flaws in the photos to illustrate the fact that they are people, not gods. The mistakes are intentional. Especially considering about half could be fixed by any redditor that has Photoshop.’

Speaking on behalf of Mr Klamar, Director of Photography for AFP Mladen Antonov told the MailOnline: ‘The results of this photo shoot are exactly why we sent Joe Klamar in the first place. He has a very unconventional view and approach to both photography and the world.

‘We are a news agency, not a PR or advertising agency hired by the Olympics and may I stress – as some internet sites have suggested – that these are not the official portraits of the U.S. Olympic team but only the images distributed by us.

‘We have made them look like human beings, as was Joe’s intention, not like pieces from Madame Tussaud’s as other agencies did. They are real people, not works of art.‘And further, for him to be criticized for not using Photoshop or any other kind of digital touch up is incredible, considering how much photographers are usually criticized for this. It is not our policy to use these.

‘We are very happy with Mr Klamar’s work and he is very proud of it himself. He was given one minute with each athlete for which he took more than a dozen shots for each which in itself is a remarkable achievement. These are only a small selection of the hundreds he took.

‘He is one of the best photographers we have.’

It is true that the photographers were each given a small spot where they shot each athlete and were only given a small window of time in which to do it.

Mr Antonov criticized photographs used by other agencies for how much they changed the originals through use of Photoshop and enhancements, touch ups and other digital effects.

Toronto Star Visuals Editor Taras Slawnych said the criticism is unnecessary.

‘I think it’s another case of the Internet getting out of control…He’s offering something different and taking a chance at the same time.

‘I don’t think it’s fair to choose the worst shots from his shoot. Joe chose some different poses and lighting to get something more from the subject.’

Joe Klamar is Agence France Presse’s chief photographer and covers some of the world’s major events.

His listing on the Czech Photo Gallery site says he ‘never becomes a slave to a routine, always photographs “a little differently” and produces top-level reportage photography with a high aesthetic and emotional charge’.

Mr Klamar won Photograph of the Year in the Czech Press Photo 2009 contest for his famous ‘minimalist’ picture of two presidents – Barack Obama and the statue of T.G.Masaryk.
