Teardrop rapist

Teardrop rapist

Teardrop rapist, Police in Los Angeles have renewed their search for a man known as the "teardrop rapist"  They say the man, who has a teardrop-shaped tattoo under one of his eyes, is connected to a string of sexual assaults since 1996Although it appeared he might have stopped his attacks a decade ago, police were able to link him to another assault last NovemberPolice sources have confirmed that the so-called “teardrop rapist” -- who seemingly stopped his attacks after a string of sexual assaults a decade ago -- has struck again.

Authorities did not provide details in the latest attack attributed to the suspect, who has at least one teardrop-shaped tattoo beneath one of his eyes.

But police have renewed their manhunt for the attacker, who is being sought in connection with as many as 28 sexual assaults in South Los Angeles and Koreatown dating back more than 13 years.

Police are scheduled to hold a midday news conference and will release a sketch of the suspect.

In 2003, the LAPD appealed for help after a June attack on a 15-year-old girl who was walking in the area of Hoover Avenue and Gage Avenue.

Police said a man approached the girl, asking for directions. When she stopped to help, he pulled out a gun and steered her to an alley, where he tried to sexually assault her before running away.

Between February 1999 and January 2003, there were 20 similar incidents believed to be the work of the same suspect.
At the time of the earlier attacks, the assailant was described as a male Latino with brown eyes, brown hair, standing 5-foot-5 to 5-foot-9 and weighing about 150 pounds. Witnesses at the time described him as being 30 to 40 years old.

In those earlier incidents, the suspect wore a dark hooded sweat shirt, a green bandanna and black baseball cap or dark colored beanie to cover his head.
Case in point is the notorious story of “the Grim Sleeper,” one of L.A.’s most notorious serial killers. The man got the moniker because he took a number of long breaks during his alleged murder-and-sexual-assault spree, which began in 1985. His victims, who were mostly poor, young black women living in South Los Angeles, were dumped in alleyways and parks along L.A.’s seedy Western Boulevard. His last alleged victim, Janecia Peters, was discovered in a dumpster in January 2007, three years after his last known attack. Police arrested Lonnie Franklin Jr. in the summer of 2010, when DNA and ballistic evidence linked him to the slayings. He has been charged with multiple counts of murder, as well as other offenses.
LAPD detective Jesse Alvarado said he is fearful that the Teardrop Rapist may continue his attacks. “At this point he may hit again,” he said. “This investigation will take a long time.”Alvarado said the attacker, who is fluent in both Spanish and English, seems to be right at home in the areas where he is scoping out victims. He doesn’t stand out and fits easily into the neighborhood, he said.
Alvarado said that, unlike most rapists, the Teardrop Rapist doesn’t seem to have a type. “He targets women who are alone. Rapists usually have an age range. He doesn’t. He is more of an opportunist.”
At a press conference Tuesday, police released several composite drawings of the man they believe is responsible for the decades-long spree. He is described as a 40-something Latino man 5 feet 2 inches to 6 feet tall, weighing 130 to 200 pounds. He also has been described as having either one or two teardrops tattooed under his right or left eye. Police believe he may have attempted to remove the tattoo in an effort to thwart authorities.
The Teardrop Rapist began his crime spree in 1996 with the attack of a Hispanic girl. His second known attack came in 1999 with the rape of a 14-year-old girl who was abducted in a carport behind an apartment building. That same year, he attacked an 18-year-old woman in Koreatown.
A sexual predator has eluded Los Angeles police since 1996 while committing more than two dozen rapes and attempted assaults. Now, he's struck again.

The man has been dubbed the "Teardrop" rapist for a tear tattoo on his face. He has recently been linked by DNA evidence to a sexual assault last November on a 15-year-old girl heading to school in south L.A., the Los Angeles Times reported.

The revelation on Tuesday stunned many because it's the predator's first known attack since 2005, according to the Associated Press.

Police said the attacker has repeated a clear pattern in his crimes against the 28 women and girls. The victims were walking alone in the early morning when a man brandishing a gun or knife forced them into a secluded area.

It's unknown why there was a 6-year gap between crimes, but police said it's possible the serial rapist had been locked up for something else, ABC News reported.

DNA evidence connects 11 of the attacks to the wanted man. In the cases without that type of proof, police say the crimes mirror the others, making it extremely likely they were perpetrated by the same person.

Nine sketches of the suspect were released during a press conference with the LAPD and Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Police said the suspect is a Latino man between 27 and 40 years old, according ABC News. He is between 5-foot-2-inches and 6-foot tall, while his weight falls between 130 and 200 pounds.
